Welcome to the Community Outreach Page where you can find valable information about upcomming educational opportunities through Savannah Bone and Joint.
Educating others is something I have always enjoyed. I had a difficult time deciding to go into private practice versus academics because of my love of research and teaching. For this reason, I have been involved in the development of a symposium on Orthopedics in Primary Care for several years. It is something I have been involved with in two other cities, Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO. and most recently: Savannah, GA.
I have been in practice in Savannah for several years and have gotten to know many of the local physicians. They have expressed to me an interest in learning more about orthopedics care. This is exactly what the symposium is all about.
The previous symposia have been such an overwhelming success based on participants comments I have been asked when I will repeat the seminar. The date for the next symposia will be the fall of 2009. The venue will remain Memorial Health Universtiy Medical Center in the Medical Education Auditorium to accomodate a larger audience.

Join us for our next series of lectures on pertinent orthopaedic topics: Spring of 2010 (date TBD) Medical Education Auditorium Memorial Health University Medical Center

I have teamed up with a leader in local educational programs to create a symposium that is both informative, enjoyable, and most of all accessable and user-friendly. There will be no charge and people will be free to come and go as needed.
This being our fifth year of offering this course, we have gotten a great deal of good feedback from those attending. We have used this to tailor the lectures to those topics of most interest to the professionals attending. The new program integrates upper and lower extremities for a complete overview of important issues in one day.
The basic format for the course is broken down by body systems and is approached from the perspective of the primary care physician. There will be time for question and answer sessions as well as discussions with me at any time by phone or e-mail after the course. You will feel much more comfortable explaining basic tenets of orthopedic problems, diagnosing and treating orthopedic injuries, using your orthopedic physical exam and radiographic interpretation skills to communicate with your orthopedic surgeon of choice. You will also be able to increase in-office billing by learning basic injection and splinting techniques.

Good News: Dr. Winchell has been recongnized for his expertise in the field of Joint Replacement by being named the permanent chairperson of the Arthritis Foundation's Savannah Fund Raiser. In a national effort to rid the world of the pain and suffering of all people afflicted with arthritis in its various forms, we will be having a multi-faceted event to raise money and awareness. Our last event was held in September 2008, with the next one scheduled for September 26th, 2009. So far, we have raised over $50,000 to benefit local citizens and fund research to find a cure. This year we plan to do even better. Start forming your teams and go to the arthritis foundation website for more information, team sign up, and donations.
